Berkeley Repertory Roda Theatre

Berkeley, CA | arts/entertainment

The Roda Theatre creates an epic space with the proportions for significant new shows while retaining an intimate engagement with the audience.

Site Plan

Located across the street from the existing 400-seat theater, the 600-seat Roda is a catalyst that anchors the Addison Street Art District. With no seat more than 49 feet from the stage, the theater feels intimate despite its grand scale. The unique stage design, a system of adjustable platforms, allows the audience and the performers to be at the same level. A dramatic three-story lobby and stair parallel the street and overlook the sidewalk. The straightforward design was based on a warehouse aesthetic, reflecting the Rep’s spare, revealing acting style. The Rep received a 2003 USITT Honor Award in Architecture.
