Church Street Plaza

Evanston, IL | retail/mixed use

This mixed-use complex on a former brownfield site is now a thriving center that features a retail and cinema pavilion, a hotel, and a residential tower.

Church Street Site Plan

A key objective of this project was balancing the need for architectural variety with a coherent identity for the complex as a whole. The architectural character represents a modern approach to the Chicago style associated with the downtown commercial buildings of the 1930s and 40s. The pavilion, with expansive double-height windows, fronts Maple Street, the main thoroughfare to downtown Evanston. Restaurants, located at the southern end of the pavilion, open onto a plaza. During summer months, the plaza becomes a large seating and gathering place for the center, a valuable amenity in this urban setting. The project has been a significant catalyst for reinvigorating downtown Evanston.
