Dogpatch YMCA at Crane Cove
San Francisco, CA | sports/recreation | historic
ELS worked with the YMCA of Greater San Francisco to revive a historic steel galvanizing warehouse at the city’s acclaimed Crane Cove Park, located just north of Pier 70.
This project, which opened in February 2025, is located in the Dogpatch adjacent to Mission Bay, two of San Francisco’s fastest-growing neighborhoods. While the Dogpatch is rich in historic structures like this warehouse, Mission Bay in particular was created almost from scratch over the past few decades and, since then, has seen the rapid introduction of numerous family-friendly amenities and attractions alongside new housing.
We worked closely with the Port of San Francisco on entitlements for the renovation of the structure, which incorporates a wellness center, a popular bagel shop, and a storefront oriented around paddle sports. At a smaller size than a standard YMCA branch, this new venue is partly intended to be a tactical response addressing residents’ immediate needs for fitness and wellness options in the area. This project represents San Francisco’s first new YMCA branch in thirty years.
