Veterans Memorial Building and Senior Center
Redwood City, CA | sports/recreation | arts/entertainment | community/education
Replacing aging facilities at Red Morton Park, the new Veterans Memorial Senior Center and Joint YMCA provides additional space for both facilities and adds new green space to Redwood City.
This highly anticipated new facility consolidates various existing structures and programs into a single complex offering new community-focused resources in education, fitness, and recreation while expanding invaluable green space in a crucial neighborhood park. The naturally ventilated buildings have LEED Platinum and Zero Net Energy targets and use an innovative approach combining solar chimneys, hydraulic piping, thermal mass, solar mitigation, self-ventilating windows, and daylighting. A robust community process engaged neighborhood and stakeholder groups in developing exhibition space honoring local veterans and NFL alumni of Northern California through interactive displays and rotating exhibits. An active pedestrian promenade enlarges the amount of walkable space in Red Morton Park and updates its landscape with native plants including 100 newly planted trees, permeable paving, and bioswales. The first phase of this project has completed construction. The new YMCA (in a future phase) will boast an indoor and outdoor pool, an outdoor children’s play area, and state-of-the-art fitness and wellness programming.
