John L. Carter Memorial Park and Amphitheater
Half Moon Bay, CA | arts/entertainment | community/education
Named after Half Moon Bay’s founder, this park is tucked just behind Main Street near a historic bridge that crosses Pilarcitos Creek. The park was underutilized since its founding, yet its prime location and mature redwood grove hinted at the possibility of something greater.
Our renovation, as one of the first projects undertaken in the city’s comprehensive Parks Master Plan, uses the site’s natural contours to create a richly programmable destination with clear regional appeal. Grassy, terrace-style amphitheater seating for up to 600 and new picnic areas overlook a 1000-sf wood-planked platform stage, with support buildings for performers and equipment as well as a box office and concessions, a children’s play area, and a restroom and concessions building. We improved how the park relates to the charming downtown core through gracious accessibility improvements and a new, well-graded trail that courses through the protected riparian landscape and connects with a garden terrace that overlooking the park below. For this work, we helped city officials shepherd the project through CEQA approvals, addressing neighborhood concerns through acoustic and parking studies, driving overwhelmingly positive community feedback.
Since its opening, this highly adaptable venue has quickly become a showcase for the city’s expansive cultural and recreational programming. Today, the park hosts a music festival, movie nights, line dancing, Tai Chi, dog training, and yoga classes, in addition to performances from Half Moon Bay Shakespeare Company and other revenue-generating rental uses.
