Sand City Art Park
Sand City, CA | urban design/planning
Sand City is a small place with a big focus on murals – and even bigger ambitions for its artists. ELS has envisioned an innovative, community-focused mixed-use project on the city’s existing Art Park site.
The expansion of Art Park is part of the city’s efforts to support its vibrant and evolving arts scene. This work, performed in collaboration with the leaders of this creative Central Coast community and our colleagues at EMC Planning, puts people first by supporting creativity, walkability, and sustainable living, all just a few minutes from glorious Monterey Bay.
Our concept retains what people love about Art Park and adds important new uses, including 49 residential units (to include below-market-rate homes for artists) above flexible ground-floor retail and studio spaces that open directly onto the Art Park plaza.
Its below-market-rate units are intended to support Sand City’s artist community. Meanwhile, its dynamic, programmable space helps to activate the public realm with festivals, food trucks, concerts, and exhibitions. Our design strategies respond to the industrial neighborhood’s context through durable materials that fit into the district, while providing features such as an occupiable roof, public open space, and community rooms to support resident well-being and draw the public’s attention.
Once built, the project will foster walkability, activate the streetscape, and connect residents with essential services—all while reflecting and enhancing Sand City’s unique coastal character.
