Kim-Van and I have worked together at ELS for nearly 20 years. In that time, she has become instrumental to the firm, especially in our efforts to achieve key milestones. Together, she and I have steadily expanded the firm’s presence in new markets throughout the Western US. We have driven meaningful growth in higher education and municipal projects, serving a vast range of community users in sports, recreation, and the performing arts. And we have built up an industry reputation as a great place to collaborate on important, life-affirming work. These are the hallmarks of a successful practice, to which Kim-Van’s commitment and expertise have been critical. She has a vision for ELS, and I have every confidence that her leadership will guide us to an inspiring future, one that remains defined by collaboration, innovation, and design excellence.  

As Chairman, I am shifting my primary focus to helping set the firm’s strategic vision, working closely with my fellow board members on matters of governance, leadership, committee oversight and business development. With the extra time afforded by this transition, I am also helping to guide our new era by participating in design conversations, mentoring a new generation of designers, and collaborating more deeply with our incredible clients. I am proud to support Kim-Van and our talented staff as we advance numerous exciting commissions, including several industry-leading sustainable projects now underway.   

Joining Kim-Van in leadership roles are Gerald Navarro as Chief Financial Officer/Chief Operations Officer, Kenneth Hasegawa as Chief Design Officer, and David Masenten as Chief Sustainability Officer. The composition of this exceptional team speaks to our firm’s many strengths and illustrates a collaborative spirit – among ELS clients, colleagues, and staff – that has led to some of my greatest joys as an architect.   

Please join me and the ELS Board of Directors in celebrating Kim-Van’s appointment. With her leadership and our team’s collective energy, I foresee a bright and exciting new phase for ELS.
