City National Civic

The renovation of the City National Civic preserves its Spanish Colonial charm while adding modern concert hall amenities.
The City National Civic (formerly the San José Civic Auditorium) was a major tour stop on the west coast. The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Jefferson Airplane, Frank Sinatra, Barbara Streisand, the Grateful Dead, the Beach Boys, and the Who have all graced its stage. Taking care to retain the Civic’s historic character, ELS renovated the venue to include new fixed seating for 3,000, a colorful LED display that illuminates the building’s exterior seven nights a week, new concession stands, renovated restrooms, a modern sound system, and two new video screens. ELS also made improvements to the attached Montgomery Theatre, home to the San José Children’s Musical Theater. Much of the rehabilitation, which spanned two and a half years, was done while the theater remained in operation. Officially reopened in the fall of 2012, the updated Civic continues its tradition, under the promotion of Nederlander Concerts, as the favored concert venue for Silicon Valley.
