Built in 1927, the California Theatre has been recast as a regional arts facility for opera, symphony, film and events, complementing the adjacent Convention Center and South First Street Arts District. A new, larger stagehouse meets requirements of contemporary touring companies, for opera in particular. The historic exteriors and interiors were completely restored. In addition to a complete seismic upgrade, two new ancillary buildings augment theater production capability. On First Street, an exterior entry courtyard increased civic presence and provides outdoor event space.
