Education: Harvard GSD, M.Arch 1981. Stanford University, B.A. with Distinction in Architecture, 1976.

Place of Birth: Detroit, MI

Favorite City: Too many to name, but a few that stand out are Jerusalem, Rome, and Cambridge, England.

Favorite Building: Dome of the Rock, Jerusalem; Kings College Chapel, Cambridge; and Cranbrook outside of Detroit.

Favorite Meal: Cheeseburger with fries and lots of mustard

Favorite Sport: Baseball!

Heroes: I always looked up to the 1968 Tigers players as a kid.

Spare Time: Hiking, movies, reading, music, glass making, photography, and spending time with the family

Best Vacation: We had an amazing two month sabbatical trip to the eastern Mediterranean — Egypt, Jordan, Israel, Greek Islands, Istanbul, and Rome. I also just loved hiking on the Camino de Santiago in northern Spain this past year.

What Else: I live in Novato with my wife, Amy Peele, writer, yoga teacher, and former director of transplantation at UCSF Medical Center. We have two children — Gracie, who is a chef, butcher, and farmer, and Bennett, who is a sound designer and musician. I’m so lucky to have built my career in community architecture and love seeing how the buildings we design can benefit the lives of the people who live around and use them.
